Conference attendees were treated to a compelling discussion on expanding access to justice. The panel, moderated by John Tomasino (FL), featured Hon. C. Shannon Bacon, New Mexico Supreme Court Justice; Torri A. Jacobus, Director of Statewide Equity, Inclusion, and Justice at the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts; Grace Spulak, Principal Court Management Consultant at the National Center for State Courts; and Julie Ballinger, Southwest ADA Center Affiliate.
Justice Bacon opened the conversation by emphasizing the importance of taking an intentional and thoughtful approach to access to justice—through clearer communication, the removal of barriers, simplifying forms, and securing representation for litigants, including pro bono counsel. Ms. Jacobus explored how diversity, equity, and inclusion intersect with access to justice, and addressed strategies for advancing DEI in today’s political climate. Ms. Spulak highlighted the need to simplify court procedures and forms to eliminate procedural barriers and better serve court users. Ms. Ballinger underscored the significance of ensuring meaningful access for individuals with disabilities by reviewing ADA policies, developing transition and evaluation plans, and leveraging external expertise.
Together, the panel provided both a broad framework for advancing access to justice and practical tools that attendees can apply within their own courts.
