By Julie Clement (MI)
The Bylaws Committee is delighted to share our proposed plain-language revisions to the NCACC’s Bylaws. We will be asking for your approval at the upcoming annual business meeting.
ISO 24495-1 (2023), the first international standard for plain language, defines plain language as follows:
A communication is in plain language if its wording, structure, and design are so clear that the intended readers can easily
- find what they need,
- understand what they find, and
- use that information.
For two years, the ISO standard has guided our task: to rewrite the bylaws using plain language. Our only goal has been to improve clarity and usability. We have not attempted to make any substantive changes to the bylaws.
Below are links to two documents: a clean copy of the proposed bylaws, and a side-by-side version, showing the original on the left and the proposed revisions on the right. We concluded that a tracked-changes version would not be helpful in light of the number and types of proposed changes. We will not attempt to fine-tune the formatting or update the index until we have an approved version.

Please review these and email any of us with your questions. We look forward to hearing from you – either before or during the meeting. Meanwhile, we love working with this wonderful team of volunteers: Megan Scanlon, Scott Mitchell (AL), Greg Hilton (MD), Mercedes Prieto (FL), Tiffany Mortier (CO), Matt Pollack (ME), Valerie Pompey (MD), Muriel Pitney (VA).
